Is Artificial Grass Safe for my Kids?

By July 7, 2022No Comments
Artificial grass has always been a great addition to any backyard or children’s playground landscape. The ‘grass’ is easy to maintain and comes with a stunning look and feel. However, remember that parents always prioritize the safety of their little ones. All parents protect the well-being of their kids at all costs, even more than their own. After all, who doesn’t want their kids to grow healthy, well-rounded, and with love? This is why the first question parents ask when they see artificial grass is; “Is it safe for my kids?” When parents ask this, they care about two things; first, does artificial grass result in any physical injuries to kids? And second, does the components of synthetic grass harm kids in any way?
Below are the answers to the questions.

Components of artificial grass.

Most artificial turfs are made of polyethylene and polypropylene. Polyethylene is also commonly used to make children’s toys, grocery bags, and bulletproof vests. On the other hand, polypropylene is widely used to make plastic utensils and microwavable containers. As you can see, these major components of artificial grass are used to make tools that we interact with daily.
And the question arises: are these materials dangerous? According to studies, there is no evidence that the materials used to make artificial grass are harmful to children.

Is artificial grass allergic?

Allergies can cause unpleasant symptoms such as itchy eyes, runny nose, and skin rashes. Many allergens such as natural grass and pollen can also lead to asthma attacks and even anaphylaxis. However, artificial grass is non-allergic. This means that it can’t trigger any form of allergies since it’s made from non-toxic materials that contain no harmful chemicals.

Does artificial grass result in any physical injuries to kids?

Over time, natural grass wears out and forms inconsistencies and holes in the ground. These holes feature a risk of tripping for children who are constantly running around in the playground. The holes can also get filled with water when it rains, which results in a muddy and slippery surface.
On the other hand, artificial turfs are made for durability, enabling them to withstand high foot traffic with minimal impact on their functionality and appearance. Moreover, artificial grass offers an extremely high drainage rate; thus, rainwater doesn’t collect on the surface as it does with natural grass. This also means that any time is playtime, despite the weather.
Moreover, you can ensure the highest safety level by incorporating a shock pad to reduce the risk of injury with falls.
Conclusively, it’s also important to note that the quality of artificial grass you purchase affects your kids’ safety both physically and in chemical terms. It’s best to always go for artificial turf with a high-quality turf infill free from allergens, dust, and heavy metals.
