Artificial Turf and The Rainy Season

By July 7, 2022No Comments
In Nevada, when it rains, it really does pour, right? During our “monsoon season,” we get calls from homeowners wondering what they should be doing with their synthetic lawns. They know their artificial grass is maintenance free, but there’s something so unusual about rain in the desert, that some commercial and residential property owners call us worried about their new astro turf.

Good news? When we say, “maintenance free,” we really mean it.

Raindrops Keep Falling on My…Astro Turf

Do you remember how messy natural grass gets when it rains? Artificial turf was designed and installed to promote draining even during the heaviest of downpours. It can definitely handle the sparse amount of rain we get in the Nevada desert. The key to proper drainage is, of course, making sure the grass is installed properly.

It’s for this very reason that we don’t recommend a do-it-yourself approach to installation of synthetic grass! If you get it wrong, the drainage issue can cause all kinds of problems, including mold and mildew. Nasty stuff.

Synthetic grass and the underlayment that serves as its foundation is made to drain really well. You’ll be able to go right out and enjoy the fresh, clean air right after a storm, without worrying tracking mud all over your home. Kids and pets can go right outside and frolic just after the storm has gone through.

Your artificial grass will continue to look terrific no matter what the weather. When the rains come, just let the water wash the grass and then run off naturally. If you feel like the rain has flattened the grass strands, just take a long handled rake and gently reshape the grass blades. This is an easy process; kind of like brushing your dog. Sort of soothing, really, but in no way mandatory. Reshaping the grass strands with a rake can help ensure the infill doesn’t get matted or compacted.

If your child left toys on the lawn or a cardboard box or other items were left out there in a rainstorm, these items can kind kind of melt into the grass. Unstick that soggy stuff and discard it or take in in the house before raking. If the item is sticky, like gum, just use a little soap and water to pull it off the grass.

However, if it hasn’t rained in awhile (welcome to Las Vegas) it’s a good idea to “freshen” the grass by watering it with the hose.

So, stop worrying about the rain. Even the toughest Las Vegas monsoon can’t stop your artificial turf from looking awesome.
